Citizens of Hong Kong must meet the entry requirements for the United States to enter the country successfully. This includes at least a valid passport and visa.
Find out about the entry policies for Hong Kong citizens, including the rules for registering with EVUS.
Do Citizens of Hong Kong Need to Register With EVUS?
Only citizens with a passport from the People’s Republic of China (PRC) need to enroll with EVUS before entering the U.S.
If you have a Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) passport, and you’ll use this to travel to the U.S., you do not need to register with EVUS.
Both PRC citizens and HKSAR citizens need to apply for a B1, B2, or combination B1/B2 visa. Those with PRC passports need to enroll with EVUS in addition to this.
Should Residents of Hong Kong Enroll With EVUS?
The EVUS policy is based on the passport you hold, and not your resident country.
If you’re a resident of Hong Kong with a People’s Republic of China passport, you do need to register with EVUS.
Residents with a Hong Kong Special Administrative Region passport do not need to enroll with EVUS.
How Do Hong Kong Residents With Chinese Passports Complete EVUS?
Chinese passport holders living in Hong Kong can enroll with EVUS by completing the online EVUS form. Applicants should apply at least 2 days before traveling.
The form requires a range of information including: full name, date of birth, passport details, B1/B2 visa information, and employment data.
You only need the following to apply:
- People’s Republic of China passport
- 10-year B1/B2 visa for the U.S.
- Email address to receive approval
- Credit or debit card to pay the processing fee
How long is an EVUS registration for Hong Kong residents valid for?
Once an EVUS application has been approved, it’s valid for 2 years and can be used to enter the USA multiple times.
If an EVUS registration expires while you are in the U.S., you can leave the country without problems. It only needs to be valid on arrival.
Note: An EVUS registration cannot be transferred between passports, or between B1/B2 visas. If a PRC passport or a B1/B2 visa expires before the 2-year period, the EVUS registration will no longer be valid.
Do Citizens of Hong Kong Need a B1/B2 Visa?
HKSAR citizens need a visa to travel to the U.S.
The most common visa option is the B1/B1 temporary nonimmigrant visa, designed for different purposes:
- B1 Business Visa: For travelers going to the U.S. for business reasons, such as a business convention, seminar, business meeting, negotiations, and buying or selling an estate.
- B2 Tourist Visa: For travelers visiting the U.S. for tourism, leisure. or short-term medical treatment. This includes visiting family or friends and participating in amateur music and sports events.
- B1/B2 Combination Visa: For people who are going to the U.S. for both business and tourism.
You can apply for your B1/B2 visa easily with USA Visa Update, using our simplified application form.
Citizens with a Chinese passport need an EVUS visa update in addition to the B1/B2 visa.
Note: If the B1/B2 visa does not suit your travel plans, you’ll need to apply for a different visa type.
